The darknet is a unique part of the internet that people usually access using special tools to keep their identity private. While it’s often labeled as a hotspot for illegal activities, it also supports legitimate endeavors that prioritize privacy. However, most public statistics about the darknet come from estimates based on law enforcement actions, vendor reports, and academic studies.

Because the darknet isn’t organized like the regular web, it’s tough to get a clear picture of its size and growth. Still, various market tracking groups have found hundreds of active sellers on different darknet marketplaces at different times. Marketplaces often come and go, especially after enforcement crackdowns that temporarily reduce activity. However, new marketplaces and vendors tend to pop up soon after.

When it comes to finances, research and court cases show a consistent link between darknet marketplaces and cryptocurrency transactions, particularly Bitcoin. Over the years, as new currencies have emerged, transaction volumes have been significant, with estimates suggesting that tens to hundreds of millions of dollars have been exchanged on these platforms. It’s important to note that these figures only reflect part of the total activity.

Fraud and cybercrime are common issues on the darknet, including stolen credentials and malware distribution. In contrast, drug-related listings tend to fluctuate more with enforcement actions. Although exact safety statistics are hard to come by, researchers often highlight the risks for buyers, including scams and account takeovers, indicating that many users underestimate the importance of security measures.
